A zine is a small book that artists create. By choosing a topic that

interests you and pictures and words to describe that topic you will create a zine. I chose the topic of the astrology signs. I decided to make my zine about the astrology signs for many reasons. First, I think the signs are very interesting with everything they can tell you about a person based on their birthday. Second, I think it is very cool how accurate the characteristics can be for some people based on their sign.

Etching is a process by etching on a plate to create a print. I chose a picture I took of the buildings in Downtown Chicago. I chose this picture because I thought using the etching and print making would make the buildings in the picture look cool because of the different value scale and the ink. Using the water color on three of my prints, I painted different parts of each print. One of the prints, I only painted the sky to emphasize the different buildings and cross hatching. The second print, I only painted the dark buildings that I cross hatched on. Lastly, on the third print, I painted the light buildings that I hatched on.

Self Portrait Lino-Cut

Carving and then printing is quite the process. Carving is cutting out the white parts on your wood linoleum. Printing is putting ink or paint on your block and making prints of it. There are 7 main steps. To create a print like this, you will do the following steps: find a picture, sharpie the main outline, transfer to a white paper, charcoal, transfer to block, carve, and printing. We had to choose a picture of ourselves for this project and I decided to do this one because I thought it would look cool after I carved it and made prints. I decided to use different colors and mix them to create more colors for my prints.

Silk Screen-Printing

Silk Screen-Printing is where one uses a mesh to transfer the ink onto another material except for the places where there is a blocking stencil. First, each individual had to create their own design. After that, we got into groups and decided on one design. Our group decided to do the design of the elephant with the flower. We decided to use this design because we all thought it would look good on the shirt. After we had our group design, we had to draw out each part of the design that had a different color. Our teacher then printed it out onto a different material of paper. Before we started using any ink, we had to stretch our mesh. We placed the mesh on the canvas and used the cord to put it in place. Using the cord, we made sure the mesh was as tight as it could be. Now comes the actual printing part. First, you cover your screen in photo-emulsion. You must be careful because the photo-emulsion is light sensitive. Next, starting with the lightest color and ending with the outline, you use the positive and negatives of the stencil, and the fabric paint to get your design on the shirt. After you finish each color, you must apply heat to the section of the shirt with the ink. Adding heat makes sure the ink sets in. Once you have done all the colors and applied heat, your shirt and the silk screen-printing process is complete. Overall, I think this was a cool project because we got to make our own t-shirts.

Color + Shape Monoprint

Jelly plate printing is where one uses a jelly plate to print an image onto a piece of paper. I first created a practice image before creating my final print so I could make my final print my best work. I did the same process for both designs but changed some things for the process of my final design. First, for my final design, I cut out different lengths, widths, and sizes of stripes. After that, I mixed all my colors. The, I got my jelly plate, 3 pieces of paper, and my final piece of paper. I placed one of the regular pieces of paper down, put the jelly plate down, traced the jelly plate, then traced the perimeter of my final sheet of paper. Doing that allowed me to be able to line up the edges of my print easier so it looked nicer. I put the yellow paint down first and then pressed it onto my paper. Next, I put the orange on the plate and placed some of the stripes down. After placing the stripes down, I pressed it onto my paper. Rinsing off my materials before using the last paint, I put the pink paint onto the jelly plate and put even more stripes down, but made sure I had balance throughout my design. I pressed one last time and when I lifted my paper I got the final masterpiece as the picture seen below. I chose to do stripes because I thought it would look cool and kind of look like color blocking. I used warm colors because I like the way pink, orange, and yellow go together. I liked the colors I got after I mixed them because I liked the different hues of pink, orange, and yellow that I produced. In conclusion, I really enjoyed this project because I am proud of my final product and learned things during the process.

Block Printing is basically like using a stamp. My stamp or block was in the shape of a donut. I decided to do a donut because I thought it would look really cute when I pressed it onto my paper. This block printing process was fairly easy. First, I sketched out the design of my block onto a piece of paper. I then converted the design onto my block with Sharpie. Next, I carved the excess of the block off to make it easier to carve. Then, I carved the white parts of the donut out and once that was done my stamp was complete. I then put ink onto the donut and pressed it onto my paper, when I turned my paper over or peeled the stamp from the paper, I had created a stamp of my donut. By repeating the process of actually stamping, I created a pattern of donuts.
